A Note from Elisa

Hi there!

Thank you for your interest in an Avalon Waterways river cruise! I’ve gathered the most important details in one easy place, so you can see exactly what’s included, what you may want to add, and what to expect before, during, and after your journey.

Avalon is known for its Suite Ships, where wall-to-wall windows and beds that face the view make the river part of your room, along with relaxed dining and a choice of ways to explore each day. Take a look through the sections below, and whenever you’re ready, I’d love to help you choose the itinerary, stateroom, and extras that fit you best.

Your Home on the River

Suite Ship Staterooms

Avalon’s Suite Ships are designed around the view. Most suites feature wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows, and the beds face the river instead of the wall, so the scenery is the first thing you see each morning.

Before You Sail

Check-In & Preparation

Online Check-In

In the weeks before departure, you’ll complete a few simple steps online with Avalon, where you will:

  • Complete your guest details
  • Confirm travel documents
  • Add special requests and dietary needs
  • Review preliminary itinerary information

Completing check-in early helps ensure a smooth boarding experience. I’ll let you know when your check-in window opens.

Helpful to Have Ready

A little preparation makes embarkation day effortless. Keep these details handy:

  • Passport details that match your reservation exactly
  • Flight and transfer information
  • Any dietary or accessibility needs
  • Emergency contact information

I’m glad to walk through check-in with you.

Passports & Paperwork

Travel Documents & Entry Requirements

It is each traveler’s responsibility to carry proper documentation. Here’s what to have in order before you go.

Proof of Citizenship
  • A valid passport, valid at least 6 months beyond your return date
  • Visas where required
  • Green cards or other immigration documents, as applicable
  • Authorization documentation when traveling with minors

Names on reservations must match your passport exactly.

REAL ID

Since May 2025, U.S. travelers need a REAL ID-compliant license or other accepted ID, such as a passport, for domestic flights and certain federal facilities.

Travel Visas

Journeys in Egypt and Southeast Asia may require visas and several blank passport pages. Verify requirements through CIBTvisas, and I’ll confirm exactly what your itinerary needs.

ETIAS (Europe)

Europe’s new travel authorization for U.S. visitors is not yet in effect, and no launch date has been announced. I’ll let you know if it applies to your trip.

UK ETA

An Electronic Travel Authorisation is required for entry to the United Kingdom.

EU Entry/Exit System

Europe’s border system now registers non-EU visitors with fingerprints and a photo, so allow a little extra time at passport control on your first entry.

Travel Advisories & Health Guidance

I strongly recommend reviewing travel advisories and health guidance before your trip so you’re fully prepared.

The Guide

On the River

A few things that are helpful to know before you sail.

Flexibility on the Water

Good to Know on the River

River cruising brings you closer to nature, and nature occasionally has its own plans. Avalon Waterways handles these moments smoothly, and a little flexibility goes a long way.

High or Low Water

River levels can affect docking locations, require a ship swap, or modify shore excursions.

Tethering, or “Double Docking”

In some ports, ships may temporarily tie together side by side. When this happens, your river view may be obstructed until the ships separate.

Travel Subject to Change

All travel is subject to schedule adjustments, itinerary changes, work stoppages, weather disruptions, and operational delays.

Your Travel Documents

Depending on your itinerary, documents arrive as digital files or printed packets. I’ll let you know as soon as they’re ready.

Guided Path Travel compass emblem

The river sets the pace. All you have to do is enjoy the view.

Your Next Step

Let’s plan your journey.

Whether you already have a river in mind or are just beginning to dream, I’d love to help you find the Avalon journey that fits you best. I’ll compare itineraries and staterooms, apply every savings offer you qualify for, and take care of the details from your first question to your welcome home.
